Title
Organic transistors and liquid crystal cells for flexible displays, virtual/augmented reality (VR/AR), automotive smart windows, ePrivacy
AbstractA UK company has developed the materials and manufacturing process for flexible organic transistors and liquid crystal cells, bringing new features and form factors to displays and optics. The company is seeking partners for collaboration on displays for consumer electronics, AR and VR optics, smartphone optics, automotive smart roofs and embedded ePrivacy screens.
DescriptionA UK company has advanced their revolutionary flexible organic transistor technology, which is now in mass production and on the market in a consumer product with a curved E Ink display.
This technology, coupled with the company’s manufacturing process and materials also enables large format, flexible liquid crystal cells, lenses and displays to be built using plastic substrates. These are lightweight, extremely thin, and can be conformed to complex curvatures. It brings glass-free, curved displays to the industry with equivalent performance and lifespan, but with greater potential applications at equal or lower manufacturing cost.
One example application for liquid crystal cells is light transmission control. Cells can be dye-doped and integrated into automotive windows where the liquid crystal alignment can be electronically controlled to dim or brighten the window (or individual segments) on demand. This technology can also be made at smaller scale, for example, for augmented reality and smart glasses.
Similarly, this technology can also provide for built in on-device privacy for mobile phones, laptops and other portable devices – by controlling the angle and amount of light emitted, displays can only be viewed directly, eliminating the risk of unwanted viewers.
Liquid crystal lenses can be also created with the ability to focus and steer light, an application suitable for augmented and virtual reality devices to improve user comfort and reduce eyestrain by improving focal distances.
The manufacturing process itself is low-temperature, low-energy, and can be performed in existing flat panel display factories with little modification, providing a cost-effective solution for potential partners.
The UK company is keen to meet product developers in all areas, including but not limited to AR and VR, mobile devices, notebooks, automotive OEMs and tier 1 suppliers, and those looking to develop display-based electronics.
The UK company seeks strategic partners for technical cooperation. These partners will know their markets and customers. The company can both deliver prototypes and also assist with relations in the manufacturing and supply chain side through existing relationships. The type of cooperation may be different in each case as there will be elements of licensing, technical cooperation and business cooperation in building new supply chains.
